Emily & Joel

When did you start CrossFit and why?  We started CrossFit in March of 2013. A few months prior to joining we tried the couch to 5K program, and were getting sick of running. We also had stopped seeing any results. My friend/coworker had been doing CrossFit for quite some time, and she would talk to me about it. I pitched it to Joel. He was apprehensive at first, but he promised me he would give it a try. After the first class we were both hooked. We were so nervous, but it wasn’t too bad!
What are your short and long term goals with CrossFit?  Emily – My short term goal would be to really work on my balance, and work on being more faithful to the Paleo lifestyle. I notice that when I do overhead squats, or any lift that ends in a squat I have balance issues. My longterm goal is to be able to do a strict pullup. Joel – My short term goal is to improve my squat form during lifts, and just in general. I tend to lean forward during any squatting exercise, so I’m trying to fix that. My longterm goal is to get a strict pullup.
Tell us your most memorable experience at CFWV? Joel – I would say my most memorable experience was when I RX’ed my first workout. It was a tire flip/prowler workout with running in between. Emily – It’s hard to pick a most memorable experience, but something that sticks out is RX’ing a WOD with box jumps in it, and it was the first time I had done 20 – inch box jumps. It felt good, but I was terrified I was going to rip my shins up the whole time! I don’t usually RX anything, so it was a pretty good day!
Tell us all something we didn’t know about yourself. Joel – Growing up my father was a meat cutter. I used to go to the shop with him when I was a kid, and I always knew that was what I wanted to do. I’ve been a meat cutter for 16 years now. I started right out of high school. I was also a groupie for the hair band Poison in the late 80s – just kidding.
Emily – I met Joel and a grocery store I was working at during grad school. I had the biggest crush on him – it was bad. We moved in together a few weeks after we started dating. I guess it was meant to be, because 9 years later we’re still going strong!
Any final comments for the members and or staff at CFWV? We’re both just really appreciative of all of the help and training we’ve gotten at CFWV. We both love CrossFit so much, and we never want to stop doing it. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly, and it feels great when people are rooting for you to finish a tough WOD. We’ve both had such a wonderful experience, and we are grateful for everyone there! You guys are the best!
